Contact Lenses

Many people prefer the look and convenience of contact lenses over glasses and, when used properly, are very comfortable.  So comfortable in fact, most of the time the only thing you"ll be aware of is that you have clear, accurate vision.

What are they?

Contact lenses are small lenses worn on the surface of the eye, called the cornea, to correct vision.

What if I was told I can't wear them?

For those individuals who were told in the past that they couldn't wear contacts or were unsuccessful when they tried them, we specialize in challenging cases and offer a variety of specialty contact lenses.  Whether you have astigmatism, keratoconus, or need bifocal or monovision correction, we promise to do our best in selecting contact lenses you'll love to wear.  You owe it to yourself to see what's new.

What if I have diffculty touching my eyes?

Our optical technicians will work with you one-on-one until you are absolutely confident in your ability to insert and remove your lenses.  Some contact lenses are also available in a monthly replacement version which means you would only have to replace your lenses once every 30 days.

Do I still need to have a pair of eyeglasses if I wear contact lenses?

We recommend wearing contact lenses in conjunction with eye glasses.  Some patients prefer to wear contact lenses for cosmetic purposes while others who normally wear glasses have activities and events where they'd rather not wear their glasses and choose contact lenses for these times. In either situation, this allows you to best meet your lifestyle needs while protecting the integrity of your overall eye health.

Contact Lens Care

Few things affect the quality of your life more than your eyes, so never put them at risk. Contact lenses are prescription medical devices. To make sure your eyes and vision stay healthy while wearing contact lenses, please follow these guidelines or the instructions recommended by your doctor.

  • Do not wear your lenses overnight unless they are approved for extended wear and your doctor has discussed this with you.  Ocular complications and/or long-term corneal damage are the consequences of contact lenses that are worn longer than recommended. Oftentimes, your lenses will still feel good even when you are over-wearing them. Overnight wear increases the risk of infection and other complications.
  • Disinfect your contact lens case regularly.  Wash your hands, empty the case, fill with disinfecting fluid, rub the case thoroughly, rinse with fresh disinfecting solution, then fill with fresh sollution and let sit for at least 6 hours.
  • Never add new solution on top of old solution in the lens case.
  • Never touch the tip of the solution bottle.  This transfers microorganisms from your finger to the tip of the bottle, where biofilm can grow.
  • Never use tap water to clean lenses or cases.  All tap water contains microorganisms that may cause serious eye infection.
  • Change your lens case every three to six months.

Solutions

There are a variety of solutions available from many different manufacturers. The important thing to remember is that not every solution is right for every type of contact lens. Some contact lenses require the use of multipurpose solutions, while others require separate solutions for the four steps in contact lens care: disinfecting, cleaning, rinsing, and enzyme removal. Use only the lens solutions that are recommended by your eye doctor. If you wish to change brands, check with our office first.
